Theater made by dykes,

for dykes…

(and those who love them).

What is Dyke Theater Co?

Dyke Theater Co. facilitates opportunities for dykes (and those who love them) to create, engage with art, and form social and artistic bonds through plays, readings, and community events. We are a developmental organization, prioritizing new works and experiments in art making. Our target audience is the lesbian community, BIPOC, queer, trans and non-binary folks, and working class artists and non-artists in the New York City area. The creation of Dyke Theater Co. addresses a need for lesbian and trans artists to create and present theater in a safe and unapologetically queer space. A place to achieve collective liberation via the performing arts, and to create art via the power of community in shared identity.

Working with Dyke Theatre Co. was such a treat! As an artist/producer myself, I’m often focused on supporting my peers, and end up de-prioritizing my own work. The DTC team made me feel at ease by demonstrating every step of the way that they understood my needs as an artist and human holistically, grounded in shared values and experiences as queer and trans theatre makers themselves.

But that’s a slur! Can I say it?

Not unless you’re a dyke! We can’t be the ones to determine that for you… but if you suspect you aren’t kindly refer to us as DTC. We think it’s pretty catchy.

If you DO identify with the reclaimed lesbian term, shout it from the rooftops, dyke!

Our Mission

DTC disrupts the male-centric theater tradition by insisting on a space for dykes to collaborate and be in community with one another. Our work extends beyond inclusivity, proposing an environment where queer folk do not just have a seat at the table, we ARE the table.

Our overarching goal is to expand the dyke theater canon.

Following in the footsteps of radical dyke changemakers like Leslie Feinberg, Audre Lorde, and the Five Lesbian Brothers, we use art as a tool for liberation with antiracism and trans justice at the forefront. At DTC, artists are encouraged to celebrate process, experimentation, failure, fun, and nonsense.
